Sheila Patek is a professor in the Biology Department at Duke. After her own travails finding a research position as an undergraduate, she was inspired by UC Berkeley’s Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP) to create a new, web-based system to “level the playing field” for undergraduates interested in doing research. She started developing the Drupal-based program while at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and then developed a new version for Duke. Many, many people have helped develop this program along the way, both at UMass (especially Mike Selden and Steve Brewer) and at Duke (especially Qian Wang, Kyle Skrinak, and John Herr). The National Science Foundation, via Patek’s NSF CAREER Award, has helped fund the development of these programs.
